POUL KJAERHOLM (1929-1980) trained to become a furniture maker and studied under famous Danish architect/designers such as Hans Wegner and Arne Jacobsen. He was quickly attracted to the concepts of the Modern Movement. Furniture designs by Mies van der Rohe, Le Corbusier and Charles and Ray Eames particularly influenced him to adopt an industrial approach and make use of steel, which was remarkable in the traditional Denmark of his day where wood was the preferred material. KJÆRHOLM's rich legacy is still very significant. His superb use of material, subtle details, plain shapes and durable approach is a permanent source of inspiration. Gerrit Rietveld admired his modern, functionalistic viewpoint 'that nipped any extravagant tendency towards luxury in the bud'. In 2004 the Museum of Modern Art (NY) chose KJÆRHOLM furniture for its new wing. |
